Why two methods

Blood and DNA markers in one sample

Most home bowel tests look only for hidden blood in the stool. Some bowel cancers and pre-cancerous growths don't bleed all the time, so a blood-only test can miss them on the day the sample is taken.

ColoAlert combines a quantitative immunochemical test for blood with DNA analysis. It measures the amount of human DNA in the sample and looks for 27 variants of the KRAS and BRAF genes. All of this comes from one sample, collected at home.

Healthcare partners can ask for our partner brochure, which includes the clinical evidence and a comparison with qFIT and Cologuard, and a copy of the full study.

What the study found

In the most recent peer-reviewed study of ColoAlert:

84.2%
of colorectal cancers detected, across all stages (sensitivity)
91.5%
of people without cancer correctly given a negative result (specificity)
75%
of high-grade dysplasia detected, a pre-cancerous change

Source: Krammes et al., Clinical Laboratory 2025;71:34–39. No screening test detects every cancer, so a negative result does not rule out bowel cancer.

The process

How a ColoAlert test works

  1. Kit supplied

Through a partner pharmacy or clinic, or bought directly from MeCheck.

  2. Sample at home

The patient collects one small stool sample in private, following the step-by-step instructions.

  3. Posted to the lab

The sample goes back in the UN3373-compliant packaging supplied, for analysis at biovis in Germany.

  4. Results reported

Partner clinics report results to their own patients. MeCheck orders are reported by Northwest Health Ltd, a CQC-registered clinic.

Understanding results

What a result means

Normal result

No markers were found above the threshold. A normal result does not rule out bowel cancer. Anyone who develops symptoms should see their GP, whatever the test said.

Abnormal result

This is not a diagnosis. It means further investigation is needed, usually a colonoscopy. A GP reviews and discusses every abnormal result free of charge and advises on next steps.

Important: screening tests are for people without symptoms. They are not a diagnosis and do not replace assessment by a doctor. If you have bleeding, a persistent change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain or unexplained tiredness, contact your GP without delay.

Questions

ColoAlert FAQ

What is the regulatory status of ColoAlert?

Test Set 920 (ColoAlert) is manufactured by biovis Diagnostik MVZ GmbH as an in-house medical device under Regulations (EU) 2017/745 and 2017/746. The stool collection tube is CE-IVD marked. Samples are analysed exclusively at biovis in Limburg-Eschhofen, Germany, a laboratory accredited to DIN EN ISO 15189.

Who should not use ColoAlert?

People with bowel symptoms should see their GP rather than use a home screening test. The test is intended for adults aged 45 and over without symptoms.

Who reports results to patients?

Tests supplied through a partner clinic are reported by that clinic. Tests bought through MeCheck are reported by Northwest Health Ltd, a CQC-registered clinic.
